About being in the IAS

  1. This was a short essay on an “Introspection” that I felt the IAS fraternity had to undergo, lest it fell by the wayside. This I wrote for the Tamil Nadu IAS Association Magazine “Mullai” in 2001. 14 years later, I still stand by every word of what I wrote, and wish to state here that absolute integrity, innovative and proactive approach and delivery of public services at the doorstep of our Citizens alone can differentiate the IAS from the rest. We cant remain different if we are not different.
  1. I wish to call the IAS, the Indian Amazing Service, because that has been my experience so far. The system allows one to do maximum good, maximum damage or somewhere in between! The spectrum is 360 degrees. It’s is the officers choice completely. The transformation one can bring to any job is simply amazing! It’s as big as ones imagination can allow. Only you should do that with the maximum good in mind, the big picture in mind. You should hive no personal stake or agenda in whatever one does. But whatever decision the officer takes, is bound to have a huge impact on society positive or negative. It’s my fervent hope that all the youngsters who come out of the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA) opts for the least damage course of action. If we can’t do any great feat, we still can be good maintainers than have the stigma of having caused damage to the Nation.
